Important Update to MLK Day of Service (posted 9am on 1.17.22)

  • PB&J Sandwich Making will now take place inside Freed Youth Wing with doors open and ventilation running. Volunteers for this project must show proof of vaccination AND wear a N95 or KN95 mask (We have some for anyone who needs one!)
  • If you are making PB&J sandwiches at home instead, you can drop them off today, or tomorrow (Tuesday) during normal business hours.
  • If you are donating healthy grocery bags, no-sew blankets, sleeping bags, and winter coats (new or gently used), you can drop them off today, or tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday during normal business hours.

Make your day off from work and school a “day on” for tikkun olam.

With in-person and at-home options available this year, don’t miss this unique opportunity to join forces with volunteers in the interfaith community to help those in need.

In-Person Volunteer Opportunities

11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Temple.
Proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test (within 3 days) is required for all participants ages 5 and up.

Sandwich Making Make sandwiches—lots of sandwiches—for members of our community battling hunger and food insecurity.

Healthy Grocery Bags If you enjoy our annual Sunday Stuffing — All the Fixin’s project — this one’s for you! Gather the items needed for delicious and nutritious soups which will be given to our friends at Nourish Now to distribute throughout the community. Please use this shopping list to purchase the items for the bags and bring them to Temple on Monday, January 17 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.  You can also have items shipped directly to Temple if that is easier for you! You can also sponsor a bag by making a $10 donation to WHC’s TOV Fund.

If you plan to join us for our Sandwich Making project and/or plan to make Healthy Grocery Bags, please RSVP below and let us know — so we know how many to expect!

Projects You Can Do at Home at Anytime

These projects can be completed anytime and dropped off during normal business hours to either Temple or JBSC.

Blanket Making Kits As the temperatures continue to drop, we always need help assembling our no-sew blankets. Perfect for kids and adults of all ages, these will be given to Interfaith Works and Iona — who will distribute them into the community to help keep people warm during the winter months. To request supplies, please contact Lauren Lieberman.

New & Gently-Used Winter Coat Drive We’re collecting winter coats of all sizes, for both kids and adults, that will be donated to our friends at Interfaith Works who distribute the items to low-income families.

Sleeping Bag Collection Our partner,  Abram Simon Elementary in Southeast DC, needs help collecting new sleeping bags for their 5th-grade students to use on their camping trip in the Spring of 2022.

Important COVID-19 Policies & Procedures

For the safety of our volunteers and the entire community, we will require proof of vaccination for all participants ages 5+ or a negative COVID-19 test result within 3 days of this event. All in-person projects will take place outside and masks must be worn at all times.
