Last month, Georgia voters elected the state’s first Black and Jewish United States Senators. With this significant moment as a backdrop, the award-winning documentary Shared Legacies, its filmmakers, and other key figures in the Civil Rights Movement will guide us as we explore the paths of cooperation and partnership between the Black and Jewish communities.

Wednesday, February 3 at 7:00 pm – Rabbi Lustig and the clergy from our Congregational Conversations partners will introduce and set the tone for the film, Shared Legacies. The screening window will open, and you will have 72 hours to complete watching it on your own.

Wednesday, February 17 at 7:00 pm – Shared Legacies director Dr. Shari Rogers and executive producer Lisa Weitzman and Dr. Clarence Jones, who assisted in drafting the first portion of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, will discuss the making of the film and the power of its message.

About the film: 

The Black and Jewish communities became intertwined during the Civil Rights era as Jewish leaders backed Dr. King’s efforts at racial equality and harmony. Yet, the relationship has frayed in recent years, as a once-mighty bond of support and respect has seemingly faded, been forgotten, or ignored.

Narrated by and featuring eyewitness testimony from Holocaust survivors and leaders of the movement, Shared Legacies includes the late Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Rabbi Alvin Sugarman, Rabbi Peter S. Berg, members of the King family, and more.

Shared Legacies is a powerful, inspiring story of unity, empathy, and partnership that validates the ubiquity of the human experience and how freedom and equality can be achieved only when people come together.
