Dr. Soltes teaches at Georgetown University across a range of disciplines, from theology and art history to philosophy and political history. But, in addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Soltes grew up in India so he knows this topic firsthand! This brief talk will address the questions of when and how Jews came to India, how many, and of what sort there were and are. It will address the dynamism and diversity of a community of communities–a drop within an ocean of inhabitants with unique customs and traditions. We will consider how Jews have fared in this fascinating, gigantic country–and end by focusing on two very different artists–Anish Kapoor and Siona Benjamin–who have jumped from the world of India to the worldwide art scene. Most of us know little about a very old Jewish-Indian culture and history but it goes back thousands of years! So tonight we will scratch the surface of this topic with an expert guide. It will be fascinating.
Following the presentation, we will partake in a dinner of real Indian food provided by Mohan Mistry and the wonderful folks at the BAPS Temple. Indian food is a vibrant and diverse culinary tapestry that varies widely across regions, cultures, and traditions. It’s known for its bold flavors, aromatic spices, and colorful presentations. Non-spicy and vegetarian options will be there too. You will love it!
Indeed, there can be no Bollywood celebration without dancing. Modern Indian dance incorporates elements from Bollywood, blending traditional styles with contemporary music and choreography. Bollywood dance is known for its energetic movements, colorful costumes, and popular music. Since few of us have any experience, we are bringing in some experts to show and guide us in our journey toward becoming “professional” Bollywood dancers. No experience is necessary and we will have a lot of fun.
