As the warm days of summer give way to the crispness of fall, we invite you to join us in welcoming the High Holy Days with a special S’lichot celebration. This year, we are thrilled to present Tikkun Leil S’lichot: A Taste of WHC, Saturday, September 28, an evening filled with community, learning, prayer, and of course, delicious food.
What is S’lichot?
S’lichot is a series of penitential prayers and liturgies that mark the beginning of the High Holy Days. Traditionally held on the Saturday night before Rosh HaShanah, S’lichot sets the tone for the Days of Awe, providing us an opportunity for introspection, repentance, and spiritual preparation. The prayers and melodies of S’lichot are haunting and beautiful, calling us to reflect on our actions over the past year and seek forgiveness as we embark on a new one.
A Feast to Begin
Our evening will commence at 5:30 pm with a sumptuous meal that promises to delight your taste buds. Savor a selection of fine wines and a variety of delectable dishes, the perfect prelude to a night of reflection and community. This dinner is not just about the food, but about bringing us together to share stories, laughter, and the anticipation of the High Holy Days. The cost for dinner is $36 for members and $54 for non-members. Remember, registration is required!
Enriching Workshops Led by Our Clergy
Following dinner, from 7:00-7:45 pm, you will have the unique opportunity to participate in one of several clergy-led workshops, each offering a distinct perspective on the High Holy Days. Unfortunately, you can only pick one, but whichever you choose will be a rewarding experience:
A Community United in Prayer
At 8:00 pm, the poignant and moving S’lichot service begins. Led by our rabbis and cantors, they will weave together prayers, music (including the soul-stirring Avinu Malkeinu by Max Janowski), and moments of silence, creating a space for us to open our hearts and welcome the High Holy Days. The Torahs will pass through the Sanctuary as we change their mantels to the special white High Holy Days coverings. The service is inclusive and engaging, making it a perfect time for families, individuals, and people of all ages to come together in prayer.
Sweet Endings: Dessert Tasting and Recipe Share
Our evening will conclude with a dessert reception at 9:00 pm. But this is no ordinary dessert spread — it’s one that you create! Bring your favorite homemade dessert to share with the community. As we taste each other’s creations, we’ll also share the stories and recipes behind them, fostering connections and friendships in a sweet and meaningful way.
