Home > Events > Learn > Praying in Pandemic
For millennia, Jews have turned to prayer to share praise, seek assistance, and express gratitude. Our earliest prayers were derived from the Torah and other sacred texts, and over time, we have amassed a spectacular and ongoing collection of prayers for everything from the birth of a child to the death of a loved one. We even have a prayer for the sight of a rainbow! While one may think of prayer as something done in the confines of a house of worship, Judaism reminds us that prayer has and can take place anywhere, at any time—for any reason.
While we are in the midst of this ongoing pandemic, we invite you to join Rabbi Susan Shankman and Director of Lifelong Learning Stephanie Tankel for a fresh look at the potential and power of prayer. Through an exploration of contemporary and ancient prayers, we will tap into the potential of some beautiful and powerful pieces. Each session in this four-week class will uncover the history, intent, and meaning of a different prayer, giving participants new insights into the praying experience.
Through personal narratives, curiosity, and creativity, individuals will come away with a sense of ownership for each of the four prayers we will explore.
This 4-week course will meet on Monday nights at 8:00 pm starting on February 15 on Zoom.
It is free for WHC members; $18 for non-members.
