Standing Against Disruption and Antisemitism on Campus

As the anniversary of the tragic October 7th attacks approaches, we find ourselves once again facing an unsettling reality: groups like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) are planning disruptive protests, targeting memorial events, and stoking tension on college campuses. The rhetoric surrounding these activities is troubling, and there are alarming reports that students might attempt to rebuild encampments and set up checkpoints, creating chaos reminiscent of last year.

We must prevent these disruptions from marring another school year. Memorial events are intended to honor those who suffered and lost their lives, and these gatherings deserve to be conducted with dignity, respect, and peace. The reappearance of violent demonstrations and disorder on campuses undermines that sense of community and safety.

Now more than ever, we must speak out. The voices of students, faculty, parents, and allies play a critical role in urging campus leaders to take a firm stand. Schools must prioritize the safety and security of their students, ensuring that antisemitic actions and violence are unequivocally condemned.

Washington Hebrew Congregation stands in solidarity with those advocating for a peaceful and respectful environment for all. We encourage you to act by contacting your school’s leadership. Urge them to safeguard student safety, respect the memory of those we mourn, and prevent the spread of division and hatred on campuses.

You can make a difference. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has a site where you can find your school (or your children’s) and send a message to its leaders. Together, let’s ensure that this school year begins with the commitment to peace and mutual respect that every student deserves. Consider sharing this message with friends, family, and neighbors so we can amplify our collective voice.
