We are happy to share that this summer, Washington Hebrew Congregation helped make it possible for more than 40 students from Abram Simon Elementary School in Southeast, D.C. to attend a week of summer camp at Elks Lodge Camp Barrett.
The camp is located less than an hour away in Annapolis, Maryland. Highlights included zip-lines, making tie-dye t-shirts, nature walks, carnival night, game night, and team sports. The camp is a cell-free and electronics-free zone so all the focus is on being outside and having fun.
For the past 17 years, our Congregation has made it possible for more than 500 students from Abram Simon to spend part of their summer at Camp. This is more than just some time away. Many of these children have never left the District and most have never been away from home. Camp is a life-changing experience. Many of our campers return year after year until they age out — and then they come back as camp staff or counselors! We’ve already heard from two of our campers that they are counting the days until camp next summer.
We welcome your contributions to the Abram Simon Elementary School Camp Fund. Your donations enable us to purchase sheets, sleeping bags, towels, and toiletries for our young campers.
