This past Sunday, more than 700 congregants came together to make a difference for the 25th anniversary of WHC Mitzvah Day.
Fulfilling our congregational commitment to help those who are homeless, sick, hungry, and in need, our volunteers at Temple and JBSC put together:
2,525 turkey sandwiches;
2,600 trail mix bags for hungry kids who don’t always have access to three meals per day;
900 fleece blankets;
1,100 individual toiletry kits for the homeless;
50 buckets filled with cleaning supplies for the newly homebound;
100s of pounds of fresh vegetables cut for nutritious soup;
50 beanie caps decorated for kids who lose their hair to cancer treatment; and
70 pinatas and 39 colorful, cheerful cakes decorated for kids in need to celebrate birthdays.
At locations in the D.C. metro area:
26 WHC friends visited the Hebrew Home to play bingo with seniors;
15 volunteers planted flowers at the Carrie Simon House;
10 spring helpers worked at DC Greens;
14 volunteers enjoyed a show with the Teen Angel Project at Homecrest House;
34 volunteers from the auxiliary 2239 helped with house repairs at a home in D.C.;
…and so much more!
All of the above, PLUS YOU, amounted to an extraordinary day filled with volunteers of all ages who put the Mitzvah in celebrating 25 years of Mitzvah Day at WHC. A special thanks to Chairs Kim Goldsteen and Lauren Wiseman and Vice-Chairs Wendy Cohen and Sharon Kessler for their leadership.
